Gingivitis Symptoms & Prevention

How to spot and reverse the earliest stage of gum disease.

1 min read

Gingivitis is a common form of gum disease — but don't let that fool you, it's still serious. This mild yet irritating condition causes redness, swelling, and bleeding around the base of your teeth. Left untreated, it can progress to periodontitis, which can lead to tooth loss. The good news is gingivitis is preventable and reversible.

Symptoms to watch for

Healthy gums are firm, pale pink, and fit snugly around your teeth. If you notice swollen or puffy gums, bright red or dark red gums, gums that bleed easily during brushing or flossing, tenderness, or persistent bad breath, it's time to take action. Early treatment is the key to reversing gingivitis before it becomes a bigger problem.

Why gingivitis happens

Gingivitis has one major culprit — plaque buildup. Plaque is a sticky film of bacteria that forms on your teeth after eating starchy or sugary foods. If you don't remove it daily, it hardens into tartar, which only a dental professional can remove. As tartar builds up, it irritates the gums, leading to inflammation and gingivitis.

Risk factors

Poor oral hygiene, smoking or tobacco, crooked teeth that are harder to clean, hormonal changes such as pregnancy, medical conditions that affect immunity like diabetes, and certain medications all raise your risk. Staying on top of your oral health keeps these factors in check.

Prevention is key

Gingivitis is preventable — and even reversible — with consistent habits: brush at least twice a day for two minutes and floss daily, visit us for regular cleanings and checkups (usually every 6 to 12 months), and lead a healthy lifestyle with a balanced diet and no smoking. If you notice any signs, schedule an appointment right away.
